Class Description:
What happens when you move purely for pleasure, rather than a particular goal or aesthetic or preconceived notion of "dance" or yoga or any other movement practice? What does it feel like when you let your body be the guide, and let go of all the "shoulds" ?

This mindfulness based movement practice can be described as something along the lines of "somatic exploration", "movement therapy", "dance therapy," "embodiment practice", "free movement", "mindful movement", "therapeutic movement", body love" etc.

In each 60min session you will begin with a guided, mindfulness based body scan, with a focus on relaxation, sensation, breath, and non-judgemental awareness, to get you IN you body. You will then be guided through a series of prompts to help you start exploring movement. These prompts will help you get connected to your body, with different points of focus to enhance awareness and sensation, and inviting different types of movement. These prompts could bring your awareness to your heartbeat, sounds, textures, external objects, emotions, certain part of your body, certain sizes/speeds/shapes of movement etc. This could "look" an infinite number of ways, from stretching, to "dancing", to shaking, to swaying, to gesturing, or simply laying on the floor... the important part is how it FEELS in YOUR body. Each session will end with another short body scan and integration, and there will be a few minutes at the end for participants to share their experiences with comments or questions, if they so choose.

Each session will often be progressive, working from smaller and slower movements to bigger and bolder, or from laying to standing, with a gradual progression on the music as well. The music might be generally more slow and relaxing some weeks, while it may build to higher tempos and intensities other weeks.

The prompts may change week to week, and are there as a guide, but you're always invited to "listen to your body first" in any given moment.

Cameras on/off is fully optional and participants are encouraged to make the practice feel safe and sacred to them.

The benefits of this practice can include:
  • a deeper sense of connection to your body
  • release of emotions
  • trauma healing
  • mindfulness and awareness
  • stress relief
  • mood boosting
